Re: Brothers in Arms

I had never heard the Joan Baez cover. Thank you so much for posting her lovely, moving version. That song has long meant a great deal to me, obviously because some of the things I write, but also because of Kurt Schork.

Kurt was one of the finest reporters who covered the siege of Sarajevo, staying when others left, taking chances, and distinguishing himself as both a humanatarian and journalist. The people of Sarajevo loved him so that they named a street after him. Late nights after work in the field, he liked to gather his colleagues in his room at the battered Sarajevo Holiday Inn, drink, swap stories, and inevitably at some point during the evening, he'd play the Dire Straits original. Whenever I hear it, I imagine being in their company and remember why writing matters.

In 2000, Kurt was killed covering civil war in Sierra Leone.

Excellent mix, Cas. It just doesn't get lusher than Etta James.
